Kentucky Derby (G1) runner-up and Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner Journalism was installed as the 8-5 morning-line favorite in a field of nine 3-year-olds entered for the 150th running of the Preakness Stakes (G1) at Pimlico Race Course. Kentucky-breds comprise 7-of-9 entrants and are seeking their 11th consecutive win in racing’s second leg of the Triple Crown.
Owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Bridlewood Farm, Don Alberto Stable, Robert LaPenta, Elayne Stables 5 LLC, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith, Journalism finished 1 ½ lengths behind Sovereignty in the Kentucky Derby. The son of 2007 Preakness winner Curlin had won his previous four races. He drew post position No. 2 for the Preakness. Trainer Michael McCarthy won the Preakness in 2021 with Kentucky-bred Rombauer.
D J Stable, St. Elias Stable, West Point Thoroughbreds, and CJ Stables’ Sandman drew post position No. 7. The son of Tapit captured the Arkansas Derby (G1) before finishing seventh in the Kentucky Derby after encountering early traffic. Trainer Mark Casse won the 2019 Preakness with Kentucky-bred War of Will.
Winchell Thoroughbreds, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith’s Clever Again drew post position No. 8. The son of 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah is making his graded stakes debut in the Preakness after winning the Hot Springs Stakes at Oaklawn in his most recent outing. Trainer Steve Asmussen won the Preakness with Curlin in 2007 and Rachel Alexandra in 2009.
SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, Stonestreet Stables, Diane Bashor, Determined Stables, Robert Masterson, Tom Ryan, Waves Edge Capital, and Catherine Donovan’s Goal Oriented drew the rail post for his stakes debut in the Preakness. The son of Not This Time is perfect in two career starts. He captured a maiden special weight at Santa Anita and then won an allowance race at Churchill Downs on the Kentucky Derby undercard.
